With cold weather expected over the next several days, a warming centre will open in the Comox Valley for the homeless and less fortunate.

The Comox Valley Regional District announced that they will be opening their extreme weather warming centre at their civic room in Courtenay between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. beginning Dec. 26 and lasting until Dec. 29.

The centre, which is located on 770 Harmston Ave., are wheelchair accessible and will be staffed with the appropriate personnel to ensure all proper safety precautions are adhered to, according to a press release from the regional district.

“Access to a warm and dry space could be the difference between life and death for those who are under-housed and for people experiencing homelessness during extreme weather,” the regional district said in a press release.

Funding for the centre is covered by the provincial government through Emergency Management BC.

Temperatures are expected to dip anywhere between -7 C to -12 C in the region over the coming days, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
