As fire crews continue to hold the Mt. Hayes wildfire near Ladysmith, the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) Tuesday night announced a local state of emergency and an evacuation alert for area residences has been lifted.

The joint Evacuation Alert with the Regional District of Nanaimo applies to 20 properties on Takala Road, David Road and Ivey Road.

An evacuation alert for 20 residential properties, issued because of the Mt. Hayes wildfire near Ladysmith, has been rescinded.

The State of Local Emergency was declared Aug. 19 for the area of Electoral Area ‘H’ west of the Trans Canada Highway and the area north of Tyee Creek in Electoral Area ‘G’.

Evacuation orders for a FortisBC facility and the Bush Creek Fish Hatchery have been downgraded to Evacuation Alerts, which remain in place.

The Mt. Hayes fire, which started on Aug. 19, is still listed at an estimated 73 hectares in size, is still listed as “being held”.

The CVRD says ongoing suppression efforts are focused on the area to the south, where the fire is dug in and continues to burn.
