Crews to resume search for missing Nanaimo man Rick Larson

Nanaimo Search and Rescue will be resuming the search for Rick Larson who has been missing since Oct. 25.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, 45 search and rescue personnel, 20 volunteers from the Nanaimo RCMP Community Policing Section, Nanaimo Search and Rescue applicants, and friends of the family will be participating in the search for the 72-year-old man.

The areas that will be searched will be along the shoreline near his home, located off of Haliburton Street, and green spaces where he frequented on a daily basis. Volunteers will be handing out posters and going door to door to talk to residents.

The search will be continued on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Nanaimo RCMP said Larson is an avid hiker who walks upwards of 10 kilometres a day and often carries a backpack with him. He was last seen on the morning of Oct. 25 in the area of the Petroglyph Park in south Nanaimo after he walked away from his home.

According to police, Larson told his wife he was heading out for a walk, which usually lasted around two to three hours. He had his wallet with him but did not take his cellphone or house keys. There has been no activity on his bank cards.

Nanaimo Search and Rescue will have a command post set up at Robbins Park on Saturday and Sunday. Anyone with information on Larson’s whereabouts is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Larson is described as Caucasian, clean shaven, 6’2″ and 230 pounds. He may be wearing a black hat, a black backpack, and blue jeans. The picture police have provided of Larson is recent.
