A house is moved along Beach Drive to McNeill Bay on April 29, 2019.

A 107-year-old Oak Bay house is being moved to a storage lot as the owners finalize the purchase of new property either in Cowichan Bay or North Saanich.

The 3,000 square-foot house was taken from its former location on Newport Avenue Monday morning. Crews drove it along Beach Avenue to McNeill Bay where it is now waiting to be loaded onto a barge at around midnight.

“This one is unique in the sense that it is beautifully built and it was built by an architect named P. Leonard James. He designed a lot of very significant houses at the turn of the century and this is one of them, so it’s quite a significant house historically.” Jim Connelly, manager of sales and estimating for southern Vancouver Island, Nickel Bros.

Connelly said they started to move the house, which was built around 1912, at around 11 a.m. The front porch was taken off of the house prior to the move.

“There was a little bit of pruning here and there but it was pretty smooth,” Connelly said.

“We had a lot of power work, Telus and hydro.”

Connelly said Nickel Bros have moved structures ranging from 800 square feet to 7,000 square feet. Houses are moved year round.
