Crews are battling a new wildfire, sparked just west of Port Alberni Sunday near Highway 4.

The fire is burning at west end of Sproat lake, and two initial attack crews are on scene along with a contract crew and two helicopters.

It was discovered around 9:30 a.m. and is suspected to be human caused. It is estimated at being half a hectare in size.

“The precipitation has not been in the large amounts we would like to see, so we are in drought conditions,” said Dorthe Jakobsen, from the B.C. Wildfire Service.

“We are asking people to be diligent as always in our forests.”

Highway 4, which connects the Island to Tofino and Ucluelet, is open but RCMP are on the scene directing traffic.
