No injuries were reported Wednesday after a construction crane dropped a load of materials at the site of Victoria’s new Customs House condo development, near Wharf and Government streets.

Stan Sipos, CEO of construction company Cielo Properties, said the crane was lifting formwork (a mould for a structure) for a stairwell when the load dropped from approximately six metres. Sipos said officials are looking into what caused the crane to let go of the load.

Sipos said traffic and pedestrians were already being diverted around the area when the lift was happening.

WorkSafeBC was notified of the incident just before 12 p.m. and an officer is going to the site.

Due to the incident, the northbound lane along Wharf Street was closed during the afternoon rush hour and traffic was rerouted along Government Street.

Construction is continuing at the development.
