Police in the Cowichan Valley are reminding people not to speed through school zones.

According to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, officers conducted speed enforcement in several school zones throughout the Cowichan Valley on June 1 and issued 39 warning tickets to motorists between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day.

“The officers used their discretion by issuing warnings, this could have easily been 39 violation tickets.” Const. Pam Bolton of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said in a press release.

In addition to handing out 39 warning tickets, RCMP also issued violation tickets to two different motorists, one for driving without insurance and the other for driving while prohibited.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are also reminding people that school zones remain in effect until the end of the year.

Fines for speeding in school zones range from $196 to $253. If speed is in excess of 40km/hr over the posted limit, the fines range from $368 to $483.
