When Larry Pynn was driving along the Trans-Canada Highway near Chemainus Tuesday afternoon, he never expected a cow to be the cause of a traffic jam.
Pynn was on the highway heading northbound just past Chemainus River when, at around 1:45 p.m., a driver going south was flashing their headlights.
“Soon after, northbound traffic slowed, then ground to a halt,” he told CHEK News in an email. “I could not see any indication of a motor vehicle accident.”
Turns out, it was a cow on the loose.
“I rolled down the window as it approached. And it just proceeded alongside the concrete median to points unknown,” recalled Pynn.
“I hope it got off the highway OK.”

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP tell CHEK News they got a call about two loose cows on the highway in the Mount Sicker Road area, just south of Chemainus River. Officers were on scene around 1:30 p.m. “They couldn’t locate them when they were there,” RCMP said. “We searched around to local farms and couldn’t locate anyone who was missing any cows. And when we went to go check it out, we couldn’t locate any cows.” #cows #cow #cowvideo #cowontheloose #herd #cowherd #trafficjam #TransCanadaHighway #Chemainus #Duncan #VancouverIsland #BC #CHEKNews #cheknewsvancouverisland
Mounties, however, say at least two cows were on the highway. Pynn sent a video to CHEK News showing a cow trotting past his vehicle, while another video shows a cow walking between two lanes.
Pynn says it was “an unexpected experience for all concerned!”
His video also shows a Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) vehicle on scene. The B.C.-based branch looks to increase road safety.
