COVID-19 causes cancellation of 2020 International Bathtub Race in Nanaimo

The Great International World Championship Bathtub Race and Marine Festival is one of the largest and most popular events in Nanaimo.

A long-held popular summertime event in Nanaimo has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 53rd Great International World Championship Bathtub Race, which has been held in Nanaimo every year since 1967, and the Marine Festival have been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic.

The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society, which organizes the events, said in a Facebook post that based on the province’s instructions around physical distancing and due to safety concerns, the annual 58-kilometre bathtub race will be cancelled this year.

“The LNBS Sanctioned Races, Parades, Marine Festival, Big Race and Bathtub Weekend events are effectively cancelled for the 2020 season. With respect to tubbers, safety crews and volunteer’s we cannot safely host these events,” the society said.

However, the LNBS said its board will continue to monitor the guidelines and if there is an opportunity to host a race this season, they will seek advice from its members and tubbers.
