Couple and dog escape house fire near Nanaimo

Two residents and their dog escaped a fire that completely engulfed their home near Nanaimo on Friday evening.

The fire occurred around 8:30 p.m. along Forest Hill Place in Cassidy, a community just south of Nanaimo.

Firefighters from Cranberry, Extension and Cassidy responded to the blaze.

Cranberry Fire Chief Ron Gueulette says the home’s attached garage was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, and that the fire was spreading to the structure’s roof.

The two occupants of the home and their dog were able to escape the fire unharmed.

Meanwhile, the home itself was completely destroyed, according to the fire chief.

The residents are now being assisted by emergency social services.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
