A woman has died under reportedly mysterious circumstances while under the care of Mount St. Mary Hospital, a care facility in Victoria.

One witness told CHEK News that there were screams coming from the outside courtyard at the care facility Monday evening and submitted a picture of an undercover area outside the hospital covered in a white tarp.

The Victoria Fire Department confirmed they responded to Mount St Mary Hospital just before 8 p.m. Monday night. The call came through BC Ambulance that someone was suffering from possible burns. When crews arrived, they say the fire was already out and contained to a single chair.

The hospital’s CEO, Sara John Fowler, would not comment on the details of what happened but did confirm an unexpected death occurred. Fowler also offered condolences to the woman’s family and friends.

One woman who knew the victim also told CHEK NEWS everyone at the facility is shaken up with what happened.

A notice was posted inside the hospital. It reads “Counsellors from our Employee and Assistance Provider Walmsley will be available for staff and others to drop in and debrief about Stephanie’s tragic accident on Monday,” the notice reads.

The coroner has also confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating how, when and by what means Odinson died.
