Coroner confirms death of woman in Esquimalt apartment fire

A woman in her 60s has died after a fire broke out in an Esquimalt apartment Sunday afternoon.

The BC Coroners’ Service confirms an investigation is in the early stages into the death and no other details are being provided at this time.

People were evacuated from Lindsay Place in the 800-block of Craigflower Road as the Esquimalt Fire Department was called to the large blaze just before 4 p.m.

Assistance was provided from CFB Esquimalt, Victoria and View Royal fire crews.

Witnesses said one woman was stuck on a balcony and members of the public were trying to get her to jump from the fourth floor, and were holding a blanket.

Multiple ladder rescues were conducted and officials believe all other occupants were able to evacuate and some suffered minor injuries.

B.C. Ambulance says one person was taken to the hospital from the scene.

Esquimalt fire continues to investigate and the cause of the fire has not been determined.

A GoFundMe has been set up to raise $50,000 for the Esquimalt Church of the Nazarene to distribute approximately $2,000 to each of the families.
