A haze of smoke in the air from a controlled burn at Rocky Point in Metchosin, as viewed from Ogden Point Wednesday night.
The presence of smoke in the Capital Region Wednesday night is courtesy of a controlled burn in Metchosin.
Metchosin Fire says the burn started this afternoon at Rocky Point.
Last week, the B.C. Wildfire Service said it was planning two controlled burns in Metchosin and in Maple Bay near Duncan to help restore and preserve Garry Oak ecosystems.
The wildfire service says the burns are an effective way to control invasive species and limit the spread of trees that threaten Garry Oaks.
Prescribed burns also help lower wildfire risks by reducing the amount of fuels available to burn.
