Reay Creek Pond in Sidney will be cleaned up this summer, the town said.
One of the most contaminated bodies of water on Vancouver Island is about to be cleaned up.
The Town of Sidney said it has received confirmation that Transport Canada will now proceed with the remediation of Reay Creek Pond.
The pond, located in Sidney near the Victoria Airport, has been identified as containing high levels of metals, including cadmium, zinc, chromium and lead.
The contamination came from industrial activities that took place as far back as 75 years ago at the airport.
The clean up will begin this summer and will include the removal of contaminated sediment from the pond.
