Nanaimo RCMP say they are investigating an arson fire after a compactor valued at $2,500 was destroyed Saturday night.

The fire happened at around 11:40 p.m. on May 2 at the children’s playground at Maffeo Sutton Park. Nanaimo Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire.

Police said suspects also tampered with fuel filters on an excavator but it did not have any permanent damage.

According to RCMP, no suspects or witnesses have been identified.

Police also said no connection has been made to the fire earlier that same evening Circle K store located at a Petro-Canada gas station on Departure Bay Road in Nanaimo. The fire at the Circle K store at the caused significant damage to the interior and exterior of the building.
