B.C. conservation officers were out Monday near Sooke looking for a cougar that a man said was stalking him last night.

The man told officers he was walking in a wooded area near Pascoe Road just before 5 p.m. when a cougar started to stalk him then chase him.

He managed to get away but said he had to hit the cougar with a hatchet he was carrying.

“It definitely was, from what he’s telling us, quite a threatening behaviour, how he felt, so for us that warrants our getting involved, to try to check out to find out if the cougar is still in the area, find out what’s happened up there,” Sgt. Scott Norris of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said.

Dogs were able to pick up the cougar’s scent but the B.C. Conservation Officer Service believe it has left the area. It was likely attracted to the area by deer. Norris the wooded area is remote and is not commonly used, so the risk to public safety is low.
