A Victoria chiropractor with a history of sexual misconduct has been permanently banned from practice after a breach of condition and having a patient lie about a chaperone being present during her appointments.

Michael Buna was convicted of multiple sexual assault charges in 2007 but was allowed to continue his practice in 2012 with the agreement all appointments with female clients include a chaperone.

A notice from the College of Chiropractors of B.C. (CCBC) on June 11 says Buna admitted to not abiding by the order.

The college says Buna submitted false information and asked a patient to lie for him that a chaperone was in the room during her appointments “for the purpose of misleading the college and frustrating its investigation into his adherence to the terms of the prior consent order and his undertaking.”

The inquiry committee for the college cancelled Buna’s registration and said he is not eligible for reinstatement.

Buna was suspended in January when the college investigated a complaint against him, saying “there was a real risk to the public” if it did not order the suspension.

The CCBC sited a section of the Health Professions Act to take “extraordinary action” to protect the public.

Buna faced 10 counts of sexual assault for incidents that spanned a 12-year period at several locations, with the last of those allegations in 2002.

The first of those charges came in November 2005 and nine new counts of sexual assault came three months later after Victoria police received several complaints when a confidential phone line was established.

Buna has been operating at a clinic in the 3500-block of Quadra Avenue and its website shows it is still offering chiropractic service.
