Traffic was slowed to a crawl on the Pat Bay highway for much of Wednesday morning and afternoon after a commercial vehicle crashed and flipped onto its side.

The single-vehicle crash occurred in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 near the Quadra Street off-ramp around 11:30 a.m.

Southbound vehicles were being diverted onto the Royal Oak exit as police reviewed and cleared the scene of the large truck.

The roadway reopened around 3:30 p.m., according to Saanich police.

Earlier Wednesday, a nearby resident told CHEK News they heard “eight or nine loud bangs” before they called 911 about the crash.

BC Emergency Health Services says one ambulance was dispatched to the crash, and one patient was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Photos show concrete medians destroyed or moved along the center of the highway near where the truck landed.
