A fire that sparked in a commercial building in Sooke is being considered suspicious by authorities.

According to Sooke Fire Department, the blaze sparked at a building 2197 Otter Point Rd. shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Mutual aid was provided by Metchosin and Otter Point Fire Departments as part of the response.

When firefighters arrived on scene, crews found the building already fully engulfed.

As of just before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, firefighters were still on scene at the building and vehicle traffic continues to be re-routed.

The District of Sooke says that due to extensive damage to the structure, the building will most likely be torn down later today. It was already slated to be demolished and redeveloped.

The structure was sitting vacant, having been the former location of Mulligan’s Bar and Grill.

At this time, fire crews are investigating the cause of the blaze, however, it is considered to be suspicious.

More information regarding the fire will be provided as it becomes available.
