WATCH: The Nook Coffee and Tea café on the corner of Quadra Street and Hillside Avenue in Victoria has been heavily damaged following an early-morning collision.

A Victoria coffee shop says it is closed until further notice after a driver crashed into the building.

According to police, shortly after 1 a.m., an officer responding to an unrelated call was almost hit by a driver in a vehicle going through a stop sign at Quadra and Courtney.

Police said shortly after that, the driver collided with another vehicle and Quadra Street and Hillside and then hit the Nook Coffee and Tea café. There was significant damage to both vehicles and the building.

The driver was taken to hospital and due to the nature of his injuries, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified and is investigating whether there is a connection between the driver’s injuries and the actions of police.

The Nook Coffee and Tea café told customers of the incident on its Facebook page.
