Electoral reform referendum ballots have to be received by Elections BC in 10 days and so far, nearly 25 per cent of eligible voters (779,200) have sent their completed ballots in.

According to Elections BC, this number does not include packages that have been received by Canada Post but have not yet been transferred to Elections BC.

While 779,200 ballots have been received, only 11.4 per cent, or 377,092, have been screened.  There are 3,295,023 registered voters in the province.

There are two questions on the ballot:

1.  What electoral system should be used to determine election results: the existing first-past-the-post (FPTP) system or a proportional representation (PR) system?

2. What type of proportional voting system should be used if PR is chosen by ranking the following choices:

  • Dual-member proportional representation
  • Mixed-member proportional representation
  • Rural–urban proportional representation

Anyone who hasn’t received a voting package has until midnight on Nov. 23 to request one by visiting elections.bc.ca/ovr, calling 1-800-661-8683 (Mon-Fri, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sat 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) or visiting a Referendum Service Office or Service BC Centre.

Ballots must be received by Elections BC by 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 30. It can be returned by mail or in person at a Referendum Service Office or Service BC Centre.

Elections BC said it is monitoring the Canadian Union of Postal Workers’ rotating strikes but said the strikes have not impacted the delivery schedule for the voting packages at this time.
