The City of Victoria reports that the new Johnson Street bridge was lifted for the first time on Monday night.

The process began around 9:30 p.m. and the bridge was lifted to 20 degrees in several stages.

The city says that while the bridge was up in the air, crews took the opportunity to remove the west end temporary supports so that it can be lowered all the way down.

It was then lowered down until tomorrow morning when its expected more testing will take place, weather permitting.

The city says that no problems were encountered Monday night and that the lift went smoothly.
