Residents in Courtenay will soon be able to hit the city gym or take a city-led dance class.

The City of Courtenay has announced that city-led fitness classes as well as all registered and drop-in fitness and dance programs will resume starting Jan. 24.

“Masks must be worn at all times in exercise facilities by both patrons and instructors except when exercising. Please note that while not mandatory, masks are recommended while exercising,” the municipality said in a statement on its website.

Proof of vaccination will also be required for all participants 12 years or older in indoor exercise, fitness, and dance class facilities, the city says. Patrons are required to produce their vaccine card/passport and those 19 and above will be required to show government-issued identification.

The city also says the maximum occupancy will be 25 people per workout room or space and that instructors will remain in a designated “instructor area” throughout the class and give verbal rather than hands-on corrections for yoga, barre, pilates and other exercise activities.
