CHEK Upside: What McHappy Day means to one Langford family

When Elliot Bonner first came into the world on Easter Sunday 2021, he was born prematurely.

“He was born at 25 weeks gestation, so very premature,” says Elliot’s mom Elizabeth.

After a month of growing up under the care of the team at Victoria General Hospital, there was another problem. Doctors noticed swelling in Elliot’s brain.

“We were rushed to BC Women’s & Children’s by helicopter where they diagnosed him with hydrocephalus,” says Elizabeth.

“Hydrocephalus is fluid on the brain and it was causing pressure in his head, so while he was at Children’s he needed brain surgery and they removed the excess fluid.”

For the next four months, Elliot received treatment at B.C. Children’s Hospital, with Ronald McDonald House becoming the Bonner family’s home and their support system.

“Ronald McDonald House was a saviour for us,” says Elliot’s dad Trevor.

“It was a safe place to go after having a long day at the hospital.”

“There was a lot of support there as well and we were able to participate in a lot of activities there that helped address that stress,” says Elizabeth.

Today marks McHappy Day at Mcdonald’s restaurants across the province, with a portion of all menu items sold going to support programs at Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon.

“It’s not just supporting their accommodation, also food is provided there, social activities, wellness and health programs,” says Elizabeth.

This McHappy Day also marks a major milestone for Elliot.

“We’re going to take Elliot later today for his Happy Meal at the Langford McDonalds,” laughs Elizabeth.
