After a two year hiatus, the Metchosin Mighty Garage Sale is back.
Leading into the weekend’s event, thousands of items have already been dropped off, which in many cases were saved specifically for the event.
“It’s a lot of stuff, I mean it’s just been pouring in as we kind of expected,” says Metchosin Community House Vice-President Jim Challenger.
“We all had those giant piles in the back of our garages and people are generously coming down and literally giving us our things.”
Inside of the house sits the silent auction featuring more donated items.
“Some of the things we received are worth quite a bit of money and yet they donated them to the community house instead of selling them and keeping the money,” says Barbara Sawatsky, Metchosin Community House board member .
All the money raised from the event goes right back into the house, a space that acts as a gathering place for various Metchosin organizations.
“We are able to take the money that we earned from this sale and sponsor groups like Club Scouts or art groups….to be able to use the house at no cost,” says Challenger.
It’s an event that brings the community together in many different ways.
“We have a whole bunch of people who come in to bring in and help sort and put out the donations,” says Challenger.
“We have all the people in Metchosin and from places afar that come and drop their stuff off and just the literally thousands of people that come out to buy it all.”
The Metchosin Mighty Garage Sale runs this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
