If the names Carlow Rush and Jacksun Fryer don’t sound familiar, it might be because you know them better as the dance duo Funkanometry.
Rush and Fryer first met six years ago through a shared love of hip-hop and popping.
The friendship soon blossomed into a successful dance partnership that has taken the boys to the bright lights of Hollywood.
In 2019, they made it to week three of NBC’s World of Dance with mentoring from worldwide star Jennifer Lopez.
“Oh yeah J Lo that was crazy,” Rush tells CHEK News. “We actually got a 15-minute session just to like talk to her.”
“That went by so fast, I swear I blinked and it was done,” smiles Fryer.
Now two years removed from their television debut Rush and Fryer are gaining quite the following on social media — boasting nearly 320,000 followers and more than a million views on TikTok.
“COVID hit right and we saw people on TikTok making a career out of it, so we were like dude we got to get on TikTok,” says Rush. “We did Stayin’ Alive and that one went even more and yeah it’s crazy.”
That video of the two boys dancing along Nanaimo’s harbourfront walkway to the Bee Gee’s hit song has more than 2.5 million views — their second-highest viewed TikTok video.
When COVID restrictions are lifted, Rush and Fryer hope to take their dancing skills on the road.
“We definitely want to get back to performing, it’s what we love to do and we want to do some collaborations with our fellow Canadians and I think definitely some trips down to L.A, some more battles,” says Fryer.
Until then they’ll keep getting funky right in their own backyard.
“For now it’s just local and that’s cool with us,” smiles Rush.
