CHEK Upside: CHEK’s Michael Woloshen retiring

Michael Woloshen’s fascination with the world of television began as a child when he paid a visit to a TV studio in his hometown of Montreal.

“It was black and white TV in those days, and here was this colourful studio with all these lights and everything and that just really captured my imagination,” says Woloshen.

From there Woloshen pursued a career in the industry, graduating from BCIT and landing a job at Delta Cable before coming across the opportunity to work at CHEK as a commercial writer and producer.

“I figured I would be here for a few years and then move on to the big city, go to L.A. you know and take on Hollywood,” says Woloshen.

“But there was so much creativity and good friendships and opportunity here and just really enjoyed the work.”

Throughout his time with the station Woloshen has been both behind and in front of the camera, hosting programs such as the cooking show La Carte and Reel Guy, where Woloshen would introduce CHEK’s Movie of the Week.

“It is fun to be in front of the camera and it sort of satisfied my ambitions at the time,” says Woloshen.

“So that was great but I think my strengths are a little more behind the camera and helping grab the best out of talent that I get to work with.”

Working with that talent and his team on everything from the Victoria Day Parade to helping island businesses with their ad campaigns has been what Woloshen has enjoyed the most.

“I love the puzzle of getting to meet a local business, they’re trying to promote themselves and keep people employed and be successful,” says Woloshen.

“We’re allowed to be creative and have some fun with some of the ideas we get to play with, so that’s been really a highlight.”

As his tenure comes to a close, there’s nothing but great times to look back on as Woloshen heads into retirement.

“I’m going to miss it, but I’m happy to be passing it on to a great group of people,” says Woloshen.
