Charges laid in Nanaimo murder case

Nanaimo RCMP say they’ve arrested a 46-year-old man in connection with a suspicious death at a Nicol Street apartment building Monday night.

John Albert Buchanan is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of 42-year-old Richard Sitar.

Police say Buchanan was arrested without incident around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Charges were sworn in court Thursday morning.

Buchanan remains in custody and is due back in court Sept. 30.

Sgt. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP says Sitar’s family has been notified, and a forensic autopsy is still pending. Police aren’t releasing any further information about the circumstances that led up to his death.
