A commercial truck that drove off a steep embankment and into Buttle Lake Tuesday has been recovered by crews.

The fully loaded cement truck was lifted on to Westmin Road, between Campbell River and Gold River, around midnight.

Tow company officials say the barrel separated from the truck and is still in the lake.

The crash claimed the life of one man, whose identity has not been released to the public by RCMP.

The fully loaded cement truck was headed southbound towards the Nyrstar mine when for unknown reasons, it went off the road and into the water.

The stretch of road has few safety barriers, and in the area of the crash there are none.

“Obviously, when we have a tragic accident like this we’re going to try to determine the cause of the accident and that really is our main priority right now is to recover the vehicle and determine the cause of the accident,” said RCMP Constable Tyre on Tuesday.

“They don’t get much more technical than this,” said Coastline owner Tom Caflisch on Tuesday.

“The way everything is lying and the way the truck is sitting down there, it adds some difficulties to the recovery.”
