Catherine Gilbert: A local historian telling Vancouver Island’s hidden stories

CHEK

Catherine Gilbert is a local historian and a best-selling author who lives in Black Creek, a small community on Vancouver Island — just north of Courtenay.

Some of her work covers things like the remote island that was used as a Second World War defence post and how the lakes in Strathcona Park used to be saltwater.

She fell in love with Vancouver Island while working at Strathcona Park Lodge in the 1980s. Since then, she’s made it her mission to share the wonders of this place with everyone.
