Victoria police says one man went to hospital after a vehicle he was in collided with a gas pump at a gas station Thursday night.

UPDATE: Victoria Police has released further details of a single vehicle crash into a gas pump at a Fairfield Road gas station Thursday night.

Authorities say the initial investigation indicates the male driver suffered a medical event just after 6 p.m. when the vehicle crashed at a Petro Canada station at the corner of Fairfield Road and St. Charles Street.

He was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

According to police, a passenger in the vehicle was able to slow the car down by reaching over and activating the emergency brake.

Police say there is significant damage to the vehicle and gas pump, but there was no fire because of the quick actions of gas station staff, safety measures at the pump, and a quick response from emergency responders.

Victoria fire, paramedics and police all attended the scene.
