Alphonso Davies and the Canadian Men’s Soccer team will no longer be playing their two friendlies scheduled at Westhills Stadium in Langford later this month.

The organization announced Friday that it will be pulling the plug on two sold-out matches scheduled for March 27 and March 31.

“With the best interest of the safety of players, coaches, officials, staff, and fans, Canada Soccer has canceled the upcoming home international matches in British Columbia on the FIFA calendar,” said a statement from Canada Soccer.

The games in Langford were going to be against Trinidad and Tobago and were going to be somewhat crucial for Team Canada, who are fighting for international points in the lead up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Canada currently sits seventh in the CONCACAF rankings, just 14 points behind El Salvador for sixth. The team needs just a few more points to work their way into the CONCACAF Hex, which pits the top six CONCACAF League A teams together for three World Cup berths. Since fall, Canada has garnered more FIFA ranking points then any other League A team, however will have to wait until the COVID-19 fears die down before taking the field again.

The Canadian Men’s Team has not qualified for a World Cup since 1986.

“Fans and groups that have purchased tickets to these matches will be eligible for a full refund and can expect to be contacted directly,” said Canada Soccer.

The cancellation of the event comes on the heels of BC Health Minister Adrian Dix announcing that public gatherings of over 250 people would be temporarily banned in the province.
