Canada Post has suspended delivery for Vancouver Island following a winter storm that hammered B.C.’s South Coast.

In a statement, Canada Post said it had issued a red delivery service alert for areas hardest-hit by the storm, including the Island, the City of Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

“A red service alert means that we are suspending delivery for the day and not sending our delivery agents out or recalling them. Delivery will resume once conditions improve and it’s safe to do so,” Canada Post said. “The safety of our employees is our number one priority.”

The company also encouraged customers to clear snow and ice from walkways, stairs and driveways to make sure carriers can gain safe access to the front door once service resumes.

The suspension comes as other services, like BC Ferries, BC Transit and local school districts, suspended operations Thursday due to the winter storm.

Anyone with questions regarding mail delivery can contact Canada Post customer service at 1-866-607-6301.
