Campbell River is dropping the speed limit from 60 kilometres-per-hour to 50 km/h on Highway 19A from Rockland Road to First Avenue. The change takes effect later this month.

Drivers along Highway 19A in Campbell River will soon have to ease off the gas pedal to match the posted speed limit.

The city said Tuesday it is reducing the limit from 60 kilometres-per-hour to 50 km/h along the highway between Rockland Road and First Avenue, saying it will improve safety and traffic flow.

The new speed limit, that will take effect later this month, will match the limit posted to the north and south of that portion of the route.

“With several driveways for condominium and apartment complexes located along this route, the reduced speed will make it safer and easier to get into and out of these locations,” Campbell River director of operations Drew Hadfield said in a statement.

“Lower speeds will also make cycling and walking along the seawalk a more pleasant experience.”

Hadfield says the city has lowered the speed along Highway 19A to 50 km/h along parts of the route as they are upgraded, with the next project from south of Rockland to the Big Rock Boat Ramp.

The city says the previous 60 km/h limit was when Highway 19A was owned and operated by the B.C. transportation ministry but devolved most of it to Campbell river when Highway 19, or the Inland Island Highway, was built in 2001.
