City of Campbell River has cancelled plans to create a temporary camping site on Homewood Road and will instead explore options to help those who are homeless in the city.

It appears that plans for a temporary camping sites for the homeless in Campbell River have been shelved.

Earlier this month, the City of Campbell River decided that it would create a temporary site on Homewood Road in order to provide up to 25 “appropriately-distanced” sites for those who are homeless.

The city had planned to clear a former BMX track at the site, which would have had basic services available to those who lived there.

However, councillors with the City of Campbell River decided on May 24 to cancel its plans for a temporary camping site on Homewood Road and will look at other options to help those who are homeless in Campbell River.

“With minimizing the threat of this virus as our top priority, we continue to review options and opportunities to be as responsive as possible,” said Mayor Andy Adams in a press release issued Tuesday. “This is a quickly evolving and constantly changing situation, and council were advised as of late yesterday afternoon that there is a promising alternative that could better address public health and security needs.”

“After thorough deliberation at last night’s meeting, council has decided to explore another option that is more cost-effective and offers greater opportunity for meeting objectives to support the most vulnerable members of our community,” Adams added.

There was no additional information provided about the “promising alternative” that council recently learned about.
