According to police, a group of cyclists from Alberta were going south on Prospect Lake Road when they got to a sharp right turn near the Munn Road intersection. The cyclist then lost control of his bicycle, slid across the centre line and struck a service vehicle going north on Prospect Lake Road.

Police said the cyclist was pinned under the van and had to be extracted by emergency crews. He was rushed to hospital and is not expected to survive his injuries.

Saanich Police said investigators are satisfied the driver is not at fault in the crash and speed did not play a factor in the crash.

The cyclist’s family has travelled to Victoria to be with him and have asked for privacy at this time. Police have not released his name.
