Crews from the Nanaimo and East Wellington fire departments spent several hours fighting a brush fire on difficult terrain Wednesday.

It started just before 4 p.m. near Northfield Road and the Nanaimo Parkway.

The area is close to the Nanaimo Tourist Information Centre.

Nanaimo Fire Department Deputy Chief Greg Norman says the fire spread to an area of about 100 x 150 meters.

He says that battling the flames was made more difficult because of a steep embankment.

The fire was finally extinguished around 7:45 p.m.

No structures were damaged.

It did cause major traffic delays in the area during the evening rush hour.

Fire crews will check for hot spots tonight and again tomorrow morning.

The cause is under investigation.
