A five-year-old boy is expected to recover after he was struck by a driver in a Courtenay neighbourhood Tuesday morning.

The boy was struck in the 400-block of Woods Avenue in Courtenay sometime around 8:30 a.m., according to Comox Valley RCMP.

The street was shut down to traffic for a short time while paramedics treated the boy. Police also spoke with witnesses, including the driver, who remained at the scene and was “fully cooperative,” RCMP said.

“There is no indication that speed, impairment, or carelessness were factors in this incident,” said Comox Valley RCMP spokesperson Const. Monika Terragni. “This is an unfortunate reminder for both pedestrians and drivers to be extra careful during the busy times children are headed to and from school.”

The boy remained in hospital late Tuesday morning with non-life threatening injuries, according to police, and is expected to make a full recovery.
