A boil water advisory has been lifted for the Town of Ladysmith.

A boil-water advisory for Ladysmith, Stz’uminus First Nation and the Diamond Improvement District has been lifted.

The advisory has been put in place on March 5 because of elevated levels of turbidity (particles) in the town’s water supply system. Elevated turbidity levels can interfere with the chlorination of the water and increase the risk of bacteria entering the drinking water system, requiring a boil water notice to be issued.

According to the Town of Ladysmith, the advisory was lifted after two separate water test results show the area’s water supply meets or exceeds provincial standards for safe drinking water.

Residents in all affected areas are asked to:

  • Run cold-water faucets and drinking fountains for one minute before using the water
  • Drain and flush all ice-making machines in your refrigerator
  • Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle
  • Drain and refill hot water tanks set below 45 C (normal setting is 60 C)
  • Change any pre-treatment filters (under sink style and refrigerator water filters, carbon block, activated carbon, sediment filters, etc.)

Elsewhere on Vancouver Island, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is alerting Comox Valley water system users that it will be moving to its backup pump station from March 16 to 19, 2020 while BC Hydro completes its penstock fish screen cleaning. The backup station is located further downstream than the primary withdrawal location and is more susceptible to poor water quality during weather events.

The CVRD said the community will be alerted if a boil water notice is recommended.
