Campbell River RCMP are responding after a boat fell off its trailer on the Inland Island Highway.

A boat that fell off its trailer has resulted in one lane of the highway near the Campbell River Airport being blocked for several hours.

In a post on Facebook, Campbell River RCMP say the boat fell off its trailer around 9:17 a.m., blocking one northbound lane on the Inland Island Highway at Jubilee Parkway.

The incident was cleared just before 1 p.m., according to Campbell River RCMP.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada confirms the vessel that fell off the trailer was one of theirs.

“In the morning of Monday, August 14, a DFO Conservation and Protection patrol vessel, a Titan RHIB, unexpectedly detached from the trailer hitch while being towed on Highway 19 on Vancouver Island,” a statement from DFO says.

“The C&P fishery officers towing the vessel were uninjured and no other vehicles were involved in the accident. The DFO trailer sustained minimal damage, the truck is undamaged, and the vessel was not carrying fuel at the time.”

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

In a follow-up Facebook post, Const. Maury Tyre from Campbell River RCMP said it is important to stay focused on the road when driving past an accident.

“Just a reminder that when you approach an accident scene, the correct course of action is not to pull out your cell phone and start filming, your responsibility is to drive your vehicle,” Tyre said in the video posted to Facebook. “If you are caught filming while driving, and while on the road, you are subject to distracted driving fines.”
