It’s the perfect Canadian crime.

On Wednesday night at around 10:30 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP responded to a possible break-and-enter on Sun Valley Drive after a panicked resident called 911.

Officers immediately set up a containment when they arrived but what they found wasn’t exactly what they expected.

One officer asked the suspect to come out with their hands up and a full-grown beaver waddled out into the open.

Const. Gary O’Brien, spokesperson for the humourously said they asked the beaver for identification but “with a shake of its tail, it simply meandered through the yard and was last seen heading southbound, in search of more beaver friendly hangouts.”

O’Brien said officers reassured the panicked caller and she laughed when she was told it was a beaver.
