BCLC logos being used by fake websites for scams

The B.C. Lottery Corporation is warning gamblers to be cautious, as fake websites are using the BCLC logo to trick people into handing over financial information.

The company says the fake websites are being advertised on social media like Facebook and Instagram.

On top of using BCLC logos, the fake ads use names and exterior images of B.C. casinos and offer exclusive bonuses and promotions to register on the website or app.

The only online gambling website authorized to operate in B.C. is BCLC’s PlayNow.com and BCLC has three official apps, BCLC Lotto!, PlayNow Poker BC and PlayNow BC Sportsbook.

BCLC is working to ensure the ads are removed, but the company is urging caution in the meantime.

Additionally, BCLC says it will never ask for a social insurance number (SIN), banking information or credit card details to claim a prize at a casino.

Other indications that it is a scam is the suggestion that fees or taxes will be taken from the winnings, as that is not the practice in Canada.

Suspected fraudulent activity can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

Anyone who suspects they may have been a victim of a scam should report it to police, and report the posts and advertisements to the social media platform.
