BC Transit will be enhancing safety measures that will allow for a return to front door loading and collection of fares by June 1, 2020.

At the start of a week where reopening the economy is expected to be at the forefront of the conversation in the province, BC Transit has announced new plans to reinstate its standard service protocols.

In a press release issued by the organization, BC Transit said it will be enhancing system safety measures, starting on June 1, 2020.

According to the transportation authority, these safety measures will allow for a return to front door loading and collection of fares in all its communities of operation.

BC Transit said that starting on June 1, fares will once again be collected on all conventional, community, and handyDART services.

For buses without a full driver door, BC Transit will be installing a temporary vinyl panel to allow for physical distancing for the operator.

Other safety measures already implemented will remain in effect include:

  • Enhanced cleaning on buses and at BC Transit facilities.
  • Active communication with staff and customers about physical distancing procedures.
  • Limiting passenger capacity to support physical distancing.
  • Enhancing the red line for passengers to stand behind.

BC Transit said that until June 1, rear door loading and not collecting fares will continue.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, BC Transit began offering free service and rear door loading in March, while cancelling several routes. During the crisis, however, they never entirely suspended service as the organization says they’ve continued to serve essential service workers and those going for their weekly grocery trip, among others.

In the coming days, the BC Government is expecting to reveal its detailed plans for reopening the economy and easing COVID-19 restrictions.
