The 21 Camosun bus on Douglas Street in Victoria. The 21 was one of the bus routes disrupted during morning trip cancellations.

BC Transit said a mix of factors is to blame for the spike in bus cancellations Wednesday morning.

According to Jonathon Dyck, BC Transit Communications Manager, the three main reasons for the number of trip cancellations and detours Wednesday morning were:

  • Congestion resulting in late buses
  • Buses unavailable due to mechanical issues
  • Driver illness

“We recognize that cancellations and detours are frustrating to customers, and apologize for the inconvenience this causes our customers,” BC Transit said in a statement.

“A key to the solution is the new replacement and expansion buses arriving throughout 2020 to improve reliability. This includes the introduction of 80 new replacement and expansion buses. We have recently received the first 12 of the new compressed natural gas buses and are slowly introducing them into service.”

BC Transit will also be realizing other improvements to the service over the coming year including the introduction of new southbound bus lanes that is partially opened, upgrades to our maintenance facilities, and starting a refresh on our Transit Future Action Plan to determine the best options for the future of the transit system.”
