The BC SPCA has rescued a group of six German Shepherd puppies who were abandoned on Vancouver Island and is now seeking help caring for them from the public.

Six puppies were found in a “remote area” near Port Alberni last week by a passer-by, who heard their cries and alerted the SPCA.

“The poor little pups were in rough shape,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the BC SPCA. “They were undernourished, with eyes crusted shut with infection when they were rescued, but they were still wagging their tails and were so sweet.”

According to a press release from the BC SPCA, the puppies were suffering from parasites that resulted in skin infections, ear infections and worms, while also being infested with fleas.

The BC SPCA is estimating the cost to care for the German Shepherds will exceed $4,000. One of these medical costs will be for entropion surgery, as four puppies need to have abnormalities in their eyelids repaired. In addition, two pups will require surgeries in both eyes.

“The puppies have been receiving antibiotics and have been bathed daily for their mange, along with other medical treatments,” says Chortyk. “They are now recovering in foster homes and are doing well. They are so well-behaved and are happy, energetic puppies.”

The BC SPCA is looking for public donations in order to help foot the medical bill that will allow for a safe recovery.

Chortyk also added that the puppies will need several weeks to recover, so, therefore, are not up for adoption at this time.
