A puppy is receiving care from staff at an animal shelter on Vancouver Island after it was brutally attacked by a larger dog.

According to a British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) press release, a seven-month-old Shih Tzu-English Springer Spaniel cross named Daryl suffered a broken jaw after he was attacked by a larger dog.

As a result of the vicious attack, Daryl’s owner ended up having to surrender him to the BC SPCA’s Campbell River branch so that he could receive urgent medical treatment.

“Daryl’s broken jaw required plating, which cost $1,650,” Stephanie Arkwright, manager of the BC SPCA in Campbell River, said in a release. “His recovery is expected to take at least three or four more weeks.”

The seven-month-old puppy is currently living in a foster family and once fully recovered, will be put up for adoption. The BC SCPA says despite the traumatic experience from the attack, Daryl remains a “happy-go-lucky pup” who loves everyone.

“His foster family has nothing but positive things to say about him,” Arkwright said. “Daryl still loves other dogs, he gets along with cats and children. He hasn’t let this incident slow him down – he is a wonderful little dog and will be an amazing candidate for adoption once healed.”

The BC SCPA says it is accepting donations, which will be used to cover the costs associated with Daryl’s recovery. They also say Petsecure Pet Health Insurance is matching up to $2,000 in donations.
