RCMP to release report on three northern B.C. homicides this Friday in Surrey

BC RCMP say they will be releasing a report on the northern B.C. homicide investigations this Friday in Surrey.

There will be a news conference to release the findings in the homicide investigations at 2:15 p.m.

The bodies of American Chynna Deese, 24, and Australian Lucas Fowler, 23,  were found near Liard Hot Springs, B.C. on July 15. UBC lecturer Leonard Dyck was found dead four days later near Dease Lake, B.C.

Fowler and Deese were shot on July 14 or 15 at the side of the Alaska Highway near the hot springs. Dyck’s body was discovered in a highway pullout. Police did not release details about Dyck’s death.

The truck Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, were said to have been driving to Whitehorse was found on fire nearby. Police named the pair as suspects on July 23, days after they were reported missing. The two were from Port Alberni.

Schmegelsky and McLeod were later charged with the murder of Dyck.

They were found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds on Aug. 7 near the Nelson River in northern Manitoba. The discovery was made after an intense 15-day search that was focused on northern Manitoba after a RAV4 the pair was seen travelling in was found burning near the community of Gillam, eight kilometres from the spot where the bodies of the pair were found. Police said two firearms were found with the dead men.

Earlier this month, the father of Bryer Schmegelsky viewed a 30-second clip of a recording  described as Bryer Schmegelsky’s “last will and testament.”

The RCMP committed to publicly sharing the details of its investigation after providing the families in the case with an update.
