The plug is being pulled on one of the most recognizable features in Fernwood, a Victoria neighbourhood.
BC Hydro says the painting of the poles needs to stop as the artwork is degrading the pole, which can lead to several issues. The painting started eleven years ago.
“I’m certainly not trying to start a pole revolution or anything like that. What my concern is now that they have asked everybody to stop painting poles is what’s going to happen to the poles, what’s going to happen to the art,” Beth Threlfall, a community artist, said following the announcement.
However, BC Hydro has confirmed the artwork will remain until the poles are replaced when it reaches end-of-life.
