BC Hydro said on June 18, the utility recorded the highest peak hourly demand of the season — nearly 73-hundred megawatts.

As a heat wave shimmers over much of the province, BC Hydro is warning of potentially record-breaking electricity use.

A news release from the utility says the demand for power could break records for the month of June.

Customers across B.C. used nearly 73-hundred megawatts yesterday – over 10 per cent more than was used on the previous Monday – and just shy of the 75-hundred megawatts used one day last August when Hydro says the province hit an all-time consumption record.

Hydro urges residents to conserve power and stay cool by closing curtains to block the sun, making liberal use of ceiling fans and cooking outside, if possible, to keep heat out of the house.
