Thousands of residents on northern Vancouver Island will be without power for eight hours starting Monday night.

BC Hydro has scheduled a planned power outage affecting 7,410 customers in a handful of north Island communities including Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Port Alice, Woss, Holberg, Alert Bay, and Telegraph Cove, according to its website.

The outage will begin on Monday (Oct. 4) at 10 p.m. and is scheduled to end at 6 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 5).

BC Hydro says the outage is required so that their crews can make repairs to electrical infrastructure.

“To keep our crews and the public safe, power must be switched off while we complete this work,” BC Hydro said in an information bulletin. “To protect your equipment from damage during the outage, please turn off all lights, electric heaters, major appliances, and unplug electronics.”

Other communities affected by the planned outage are Winter Harbour and Coal Harbour, Beaver Cove, Fort Rupert, Malcolm Island, Mt Waddington, Nimpkish River, Pulteney Point, and Quatsino.

BC Hydro has also planned a number of smaller outages over the coming days in multiple communities on Vancouver Island, including Parksville (Oct. 6), Port Alberni (Oct. 7), and Nanaimo (Oct. 16).
